God Will Take Care of You

“God Will Take Care of You” is a well-known hymn written in 1904. As the story goes, a husband and wife wrote the hymn together. Walter Martin was scheduled to be away from his wife Civilla Martin. Their son spoke up, reminding the family that God would take care of them. From their son’s comment, the hymn was born.

Be not dismayed whate’er betide,
God will take care of you.
Beneath His wings of love abide,
God will take care of you.

God will take care of you,
Through every day, o’er all the way;
He will take care of you;
God will take care of you.

This is a song meant to be sung to one another. We all need to hear this reminder. “God will take care of you.” The things we need to be reminded of most often are the things that we tend to forget the most quickly. As we hurry through our busy lives, it can be quite easy for all of us to fail to really think about this truth. God will take care of you.

Throughout the Bible, we see God taking care of His people. Beginning in the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve are fully supplied with all that they need. They have God. They have each other. They are surrounded by ample provision and beauty. Yet, their focus appears to go to the thing that they perceive they do not have.

This story essentially repeats itself in Exodus. God brings the people out of Egypt toward the promised land. Yet, the people fail to fully realize that God will take care of them. This basic trend repeats itself numerous times throughout the Bible. Whether it be the kings who turn to false gods or the disciples who doubt what Jesus can do, it is a constant struggle for those in the Bible to truly believe that God will take care of them.

If we are honest with ourselves, we are not that much different. How often do we doubt that God will take care of us? How often do we attempt to solve our own problems without relying on the Creator? In Jesus’ teaching, He equates this with having little faith. Why is this? It is because the moment we start trusting in ourselves, we have stopped trusting in God. Faith is much more than having a belief about something. True faith is a trusting obedience. It involves giving our lives to another. To truly give ourselves to God means to trust that He will take care of us. As Jesus said in Matthew 6:33, “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness; and all these things will be added to you.”
