Safe Travels

All across the U.S. this week, people have faced dangerous travel conditions. Although I feel like I am getting more acclimated to the tundra known as southern Indiana, I am still no expert when it comes to driving in the wintry weather. From what I understand, however, the following is good advice for driving when the roads get slick. Here are a few tips from Car and Driver Magazine regarding traveling across treacherous terrain.

-Drive Super Smoothly
-Look Far Ahead
-Look Where You Want to Go
-Heed the Flashing Lights
-Plan Ahead
-Carry the Right Supplies

As Christians, we are on a journey. The journey is not all smooth sailing. There are bumps in the road, slick spots, and times when we cannot see around the corner.
Proverbs 3:5-6 uses journey language when we read,
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He will make your paths straight.

Matthew 7:13-14 uses a similar picture.
Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.

Throughout the Bible, we read about people on journeys—Abraham, the wilderness wandering, the exile, and the return from exile. In the Gospels, Jesus is on a journey to the cross. The church is on a journey to be with, and more like, Jesus.

As we travel through this life, we need to keep our desired destination in mind. Don’t get distracted. Don’t get in too big of a hurry. Don’t be reckless. Be sure to pay attention to the warnings.

It is possible to slip and fall this time of year. It is also possible, and even worse, to slip and fall in our faith. “Take care, brothers and sisters, that there will not be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart that falls away from the living God” (Hebrews 3:12). In our spiritual journey, may we all travel safely and help one another reach the destination.
